Learn the five ANZSCO skill levels and their conditions, from formal education to relevant work experience.
ANZSCO skill levels
There are five different ANZSCO skill levels; these are classified based on formal education, training, experience, and on-the-job training. The criteria for differentiating between different skill levels are based on the following definitions:
SKILL LEVEL 1
In the ANZSCO skill level 1 Occupations demand a skill level equal to a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification. Alternatively, at least five years of relevant experience can be substituted for the formal qualification. In some cases, relevant experience and on-the-job training may also be necessary in addition to the formal qualification.
SKILL LEVEL 2
Occupations at ANZSCO Skill Level 2 require a skill level equal to one of these:
- NZ Register Diploma
- Advanced Diploma or Diploma, AQF Associate Degree.
At least three years of relevant experience may replace the above formal qualifications. In some cases, related experience and on-the-job training may be required besides the formal qualification.
SKILL LEVEL 3
In the ANZSCO skill level 3, the occupations require a skill level equal to any of the following:
- NZ Register Level 4 qualification
- AQF Certificate IV
- AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the job training.
At least three years of relevant experience may replace the above formal qualifications. In some cases relevant experience or on-the-job-training may be needed in addition to the formal qualification.
SKILL LEVEL 4
Occupations at Skill Level 4 require a skill level equal to any of the following:
- NZ Register Level 2 or 3 qualification
- AQF Certificate II/III.
At least one year of relevant experience may replace the formal qualifications listed above. In some cases, relevant experience may be required in addition to formal qualifications.
H2: SKILL LEVEL 5
In the ANZSCO skill level 5, the occupations require a skill level equal to one of the following:
- NZ Register Level 1 qualification
- AQF Certificate I or
- compulsory secondary education.
For some fields, a short period of on-the-job training may be demanded in addition to or instead of the formal qualification.
There is no formal qualification or on the job training required in some cases.
