What is 186 subclass Visa?

186 visa is for visa applicants who are nominated by an employer to live and work as an Australian Permanent Resident (PR).

There are 3 streams for subclass 186.

  • Direct entry Stream
  • Temporary Residence Transition Stream
  • Labour Agreement Stream

Subclass 186 (Direct entry Stream) Requirements:

  • Unless exempt, 186 visa applicants require 3 months relevant experience in their nominated occupation (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List).
  • If licensing, registration, or membership is required to work in the nomination occupation, visa 186 applicants must hold these.
  • Most applicants must hold skills assessment in their nominated occupation.
  • Applicant must be nominated by an approved Australian employer and the applicant must lodge their subclass 186 visa application within 6 months of nomination being approved.
  • Unless your occupation is exempt, an applicant must be under 45 years of age to apply for 186 visa.
  • Applicant must meet health and character requirements.
  • Applicant must have competent English.
  • Applicant must have either paid Australian government debt back or should have made formal arrangements for it.

186 visa Processing Time

  • 25% of applications: 42 Days
  • 50% of applications: 4 Months
  • 75% of applications: 8 Months
  • 90% of applications: 13 Months

186 subclass (Labour Agreement Stream) Requirements:

  • An applicant for subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa in Labour Agreement stream must work for an employer under a labour agreement.
  • 186 applicants must have suitable English language skills, experience, skills, and other attributes for the position as per labour agreement.
  • If licensing, registration, or membership is required to work in the nomination occupation, visa 186 applicants must hold these.
  • The Australian employer nominating the 186 visa applicant should be actively and lawfully operating in Australia and should be a party to a labour agreement.
  • Unless there is an exemption under the labour agreement, 186 visa applicant must be under 45 years of age.
  • If an applicant is in Australia, they must be holders of 457 visa or 482 visa in the labour agreement stream.
  • Applicant must meet health and character requirements.
  • Applicant must have either paid Australian government debt back or should have made formal arrangements for it.

186 Processing Time

  • 25% of applications: 56 Days
  • 50% of applications: 3 Months
  • 75% of applications: 6 Months
  • 90% of applications: 9 Months

Subclass 186 (Temporary Residence Transition Stream) Requirements:

  • 186 visa applicant in this stream should hold a subclass 457, subclass 482 or related Bridging visa A, B or C.
  • Usually, the applicant should have worked for at least 3 years full time for their employer while holding the above visas.
  • Applicant must be nominated by an approved Australian employer and the applicant must lodge their subclass 186 visa application within 6 months of nomination being approved.
  • Only applicants of the following visas can lodge an application for 186 visas in this stream.

Subclass 457 visa (Not Under Labour Agreement Stream).

Subclass 482 (TSS) Visa granted under Medium to Long -Term Strategi Skills List.

  • Subclass 482 (TSS) visa holders in short term Strategic skills list are only eligible if they were in Australia for at least 1 year in between 1st February 2020 and 14th December 2021 and meet all other requirements for TRT stream. This pathway is only available for 2 years from 1st July 2022.
  • Applicant must meet health and character requirements.
  • Applicant must have either paid Australian government debt back or should have made formal arrangements for it.
  • Applicant must have competent English.
  • Unless your occupation is exempt, applicant must be under 45 years.
  • Subclass 186 Fees: From AUD 4,240 (Direct Entry Stream)

Subclass 186 Visa Processing Time (TRT Stream)

Subclass 186 Processing Times

  • 25% of applications: 76 Days
  • 50% of applications: 5 Months
  • 75% of applications: 12 Months
  • 90% of applications: 18 Months
