The following is the list of documents all applicants will need to provide in support of their subclass 189 application.
- Passport
- National ID Card
- Birth certificate.
- Marriage Certificate if married.
- Divorce Certificate if applicable.
- Death Certificate if applicable
- Overseas Police clearance certificate where the applicant has lived for more than 12 months in the last 10 years since the applicant has turned 16 years of age.
- Passport size photos.
189 Visa Document checklist
Primary Applicant
The primary applicants of a subclass 189 permanent visa will require the following documents:
- All overseas qualifications certificate.
- All overseas qualifications transcripts.
- All Australian qualifications certificates.
- All Australian qualifications transcripts.
- Competition letters from Australian colleges or universities for Australian qualifications.
- Confirmation of enrolment of the Australian qualifications completed.
- English Language Proficiency Tests certificates such as PTE, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, OET, and CAE.
- Evidence of Skill Assessment for the nominated occupation from the relevant Australian skill assessment authority.
- Professional Year certificate if claimed 5 points for that.
- NAATI or National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters certificate if 5 points are claimed.
- If points are claimed for specialist qualification, then evidence in the form of academic transcripts and certificates.
- Any license or evidence of professional registration.
- Bank Statements
- Superannuation statement
- Reference letter from employer
- Payslips
- Notice of Assessment, Pay summary, etc.
- Resume with ten years of employment and education history.

Spouse or De-facto Partner.
189 visa application checklist documents for the spouse of 189 primary applicants are as follows:
- Qualifications evidence such as certificate and transcripts for a 2-year full-time study which was taught in English to demonstrate functional English.
- English Language Proficiency Test certificates such as PTE, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, OET, and CAE if claimed 5 points for partner English.
- Evidence of Skill Assessment for the nominated occupation from the relevant Australian skill assessment authority if 5 points have been claimed for the partner.
- Evidence of a de facto or married relationship, such as a marriage certificate or certificate of registered relationship, and evidence that the relationship is genuine.
Subclass 189 Visa Checklist (Hong Kong Stream)
The following documents are required for applicants of an 189 visa in the Hong Kong stream.
- Evidence that the applicant held a 457, 482, or 485 visa for 4 years.
- Copy of Hong Kong or British National overseas passport.
- Evidence of 4 years of usually resident status.
- Needs to demonstrate that they have functional English. Qualifications evidence such as certificate and transcripts for a 2-year full-time study which was taught in English to demonstrate functional English or English Language Proficiency Test certificates such as PTE, IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and OET test evidence.
- Overseas Police clearance certificate where the applicant has lived for more than 12 months in the last 10 years since the applicant has turned 16 years of age.
- National ID
- Marriage Certificate
- Divorce certificate if applicable.
