What is 485 Visa Australia?
The temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) is for international students who wish to stay in Australia temporarily to live, study or work post-completion of their graduation. Subclass 485 is a temporary visa that allows you to stay in Australia for 2 to 4 years depending on the level of your Australian study qualification. The 485 visa is further divided into two streams:
Graduate Work Stream
This visa is applicable for students who have graduated with the skill set and required qualifications applicable to occupations on the “Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List”. This allows them to stay in Australia temporarily.
Post-Study Work Stream
This visa is applicable for students who have just graduated after acquiring a Bachelor or Bachelor (Honours) (allows 2 years of stay) or Masters by Coursework or Masters by Research or Masters (Extended) (allows 3 years of stay) or any Doctoral degree (allows 4 years of stay) from an institution based in Australia.
While, any Hong Kong and BNO passport holders can stay in Australia for 5 years after completing a bachelor, master’s, or doctoral degree.
What are 485 visa requirements?
- To become eligible for a subclass 485 visa, you must:
- Be below 50 years of age.
- Be a holder of an eligible visa.
- Have had a student visa for the past 6 months.
- Have attained your recent qualification in a CRICOS registered course.
- Propose a single stream, only for it is not possible to switch visa streams once you apply.
- Attach the requisite specific evidence while applying.
Subsequent Entrant Visa 485:
If the primary applicant of the 485 visa has a spouse/partner and kids, then they can also be declared in the application as 485 visa dependents. Otherwise, they can apply as 485 subsequent entrants if the visa has already been granted to the primary applicant.
How much 485 visa cost?
- The base application charge for a 485 visa in Australia is A$1680.
- Additional applicant charge for any other applicant 18 years of age or above is A$840.
- Additional applicant charge for any other applicant less than 18 years of age is A$425.
- The charges for Second Post Study Stream are A$660, A$330, and A$170 respectively.
- If the primary applicant applies for subclass 485 subsequent entrant visa, then the base application charge will be applicable.
Whereas, if the primary applicant applies for subclass 485 dependent visa, then charges for the above 18 applicants will be applicable.

485 visa English Requirement:
Along with the above-mentioned requirements, the students will be required to meet the English Language requirement. Applicants must achieve a minimum 5.0 band in each of the four categories and 6.0 band overall in IELTS or an equivalent score in PTE Academic (overall 50 and 36 in every 4 parts) within the last 3 years before lodging the application.
485 Visa Extension:
It isn’t possible to stay longer in Australia by extending a 485 visa.
Nevertheless, you’re eligible to apply for a second post-study work stream visa. This visa is for existing visa holders who were granted the first post-study work visa because of studying in a regional area and have continued living and working in that area along with their family members for at least 2 years. This second visa will allow them to continue living and working in the designated regional area.
485 visa Health Requirements:
If you already hold a valid student visa at the time of your application, then you must be covered under a valid Overseas Student Health Cover policy as a necessary Student Visa requirement. You must provide evidence of your existing OHSC with your visa 485 application.
However, you’ll still be required to apply for 485 visa health insurance at some point during the processing time of this visa in order to get your 485 visa application finalized.
