The Department of Home Affairs has announced that changes will be made to the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa from 1st July 2024, subject to the passing of these legislative amendments.

485 Visa Graduate Work Stream

The Department of Home Affairs has changed the name and the age criteria of the 485 visas in the graduate work stream.

From July 1, 2024, the 485 temporary graduate visa Graduate Work Stream will be known as the Post-Vocational Education Work Stream.

Currently, an applicant for a 485 temporary graduate visa in the graduate work stream needs to be under 50 years of age. Under the new rules, starting from 1st July 2024, an applicant for the 485 Visa in the Graduate Work Stream will need to be 35 years or under.

Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders will continue to be eligible if they are under 50 years old.

Applicant must have a nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Applicants must hold an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification related to the nominated occupation on the MLTSSL list.

485 Visa Post Study Stream

The Department of Home Affairs has changed the name and age criteria of the 485 visas in the post-study stream.

From July 1, 2024, the 485 temporary graduate visa Post Study Stream will be known as the Post-Higher Education Work Stream.

An applicant for a 485 temporary graduate visa in the post-study work stream needs to be under 50 years of age. Under the new rules, starting from 1 July 2024, an applicant for the 485 visas in the Post-Study Stream must be 35 years or under.

Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders will continue to be eligible if they are under 50 years old.

The Department of Home Affairs will cease the 2-year extension of the 485 Visa from 1st July 2024.

Stay periods for the 485-visa post study stream or Post-Higher Education Work Stream will change to the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree (including honours) – up to 2 years.
  • Masters (coursework and extended) – up to 2 years.
  • Masters (research) and doctoral (PhD) – up to 3 years.
  • Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may be able to stay for up to 5 years.

Stay periods for Indian nationals, as agreed in the Australian Indian – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), remain as:

  • Bachelor’s degree (including honours) – up to 2 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree (with first-class honours in STEM, including ICT) – up to 3 years.
  • Masters (coursework extended and research) – up to 3 years.
  • Doctoral degrees (PhD) – up to 4 years.

485 Visa Second Post-Study Work Stream

From 1 July 2024, the Second Post-Study Work Stream will be known as the Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream. No other changes have been made to this stream.
