Presently, becoming a registered migration agent in Australia is not easy. Before a person becomes a registered migration agent, they need to complete a Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice from one of the following universities.

  • Australian Catholic University
  • Griffith University
  • University of Technology Sydney
  • Victoria University
  • Western Sydney University

Only an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen with a special category visa or a licensed immigration adviser in New Zealand under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (TTMRA) can register as a registered migration agent in Australia if they are of at least 18 years of age.

Eligible applicants need to be of good character and need to successfully pass the Capstone examination. The capstone examination is an independent exam conducted by Legal Training Australia Pty Ltd. (LTA).

National Police Check (AFP Police Check)

Before registration with OMARA, the prospective needs to provide an Australian Federal Police check. It needs to be provided every time at re-registration.

English Language Requirements for Registered Migration Agent

Prospective applicant needs to score 7 overall band score in IELTS with a minimum of 6.5 each in all 4 components of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the last 2 years before the application.

Or they need to score 94 overall in iBT TOEFL with at least 20 in speaking and listening 19 in reading, and 24 in writing.

Or they can satisfy English Language requirements through their education.

They need to have completed 10 years of primary and secondary schooling in English from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, The United Kingdom, or The United States of America while living there.

OR

If they have completed a 3-year bachelor’s degree or above from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, The United Kingdom, or The United States of America they need to also prove that they have completed at least 4 years of secondary schooling and an Australian Year 12 certificate or equivalent.

Non-commercial- initial application fee is AUD160.

The repeat registration fee in the General category is AUD1595.

Non-Commercial-repeat application fee is AUD105.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

A prospective registered migration agent needs t provide a copy of professional indemnity insurance to OMARA before registration.

Passport size photograph

A prospective registered migration agent needs to provide a passport-size photograph at the time of the initial registration with OMARA and every 5 years at the time of the registration.
