AFP NATIONAL POLICE CHECK
Why is Australian Federal Police Check or AFP Police check required for Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa?
An applicant over 16 years of age applying for a subclass 485 visa needs to satisfy the minister that they pass the character test or in other words the applicant of the subclass 485 visa is a person of good character.
To find that the person is of good character an AFP National police check is required. Each applicant who applies for a 485-visa subclass needs to attach evidence of AFP check to satisfy the minister that they are of good character.
Can I provide AFP National Police check later after submitting my application?
The simple answer to this question is no.
This is because an AFP National Police check needs to attached as evidence at the time of the applying for a visa 485 Australia. As such it is an application criterion.
I have applied for AFP National Police Check, but I haven’t received my final AFP clearance letter? What should I do?
As far as you have applied for an AFP National Police check it is ok to apply for a visa subclass 485.
You need to attach one of the following 2 evidences with your 485 visa application:
- Final AFP National Police Clearance letter. OR
- A receipt of the AFP National Police Check submission.
*It is important to know that you need the reference number from your AFP National Police Check to complete your 485-subclass application. It is also very important to know that once you receive your final AFP Police check, you need to upload that in your application even though you have uploaded AFP National Police check application receipt.

How much will an AFP National Police check cost me?
FEES
$42.00 for each National Police Check application from a government department or an individual.
$99.00 for a fingerprint and National Police Check application where fingerprints are supplied to the AFP on application.
I already have an AFP National check which I provided to Department of Home Affairs for visa purposes?
You can attach your previous AFP National Police check if that police check was performed for the purpose of Immigration/Citizenship to supply to Department of Home Affairs. AFP National Police check should not be older than 12 months at the time of the application of the subclass 485 visa.
OVERSEAS NATIONAL POLICE CHECKS
Do I need Overseas Police Checks?
Any subclass 485 visa applicant who is over 16 years must provide an overseas police certificate including from their home country where they have spent a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years since they have turned 16 years of age.
It is very important that your name on overseas police certificate is exactly the same as your passport and the Overseas National Police check contains all you names and aliases.
I am unable to get my Overseas National Police Check?
It is in your best interest as an applicant to advise the Department of Home Affairs that you could not produce an Overseas National Police check. If the Department considers that you have made genuine efforts to produce an Overseas National Police Check but the appropriate overseas authority have not provided it, they may consider giving a waiver to the applicant.
But if the delegate chooses not to give a waiver to the applicant, they may ask the applicant to provide this Overseas National Police Check by issuing a notice under section 56 of the act.
If the applicant fails to then provide the Overseas National Police check their visa may be refused.
*In some cases, the delegate may request an applicant to submit a Form 80 if more detailed personal information relating to the applicant’s identity, employment, and education history is required for character test.
