Parents of Australian citizens and Permanent Residents (PR) of Australia can visit Australia for purpose of tourism and visiting their children and grandchildren.
In some cases, parents of Australian Temporary Visa Holders may also be granted Visitor Visa if they can demonstrate that they are genuine temporary visitors and can demonstrate financial capacity and fulfill other criteria.
A visitor visa or a tourist visa for Australia is normally granted to parents from a period of 3 months to 3 years.
The visitor visa subclass granted to parents may have a limit of 3 months or 12 months continuous stay. A parent on the visitor visa in Australia is allowed to stay a maximum of 12 months in any given 18 months period.
How is 12 months stay calculated in 18 months for a visitor visa Australia?
There seems to be a lot of confusion among children of the parents who are in Australia on a visitor visa of how the 12-month stay is calculated.
So, we will take an example of how the 12 month stay on the visitor visa is calculated.
Example: Let’s suppose that a parent of an Australian citizen or Australian Permanent resident (PR) arrived in Australia on 1st January 2023. Let’s assume they will stay for 6 months. They then visit their home country (let’s suppose India) for 3 months. They then arrive back on their visitor visa again after 3 months.
So, in these 9 months the parents of the Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents have already lived for 6 months in Australia.
Parents on Visitor Visa Australia stayed for the following months in Australia and India.

*March 2023
*April 2023
*May 2023

*September 2023
*October 2023

March 2024
Even though the total months calculated back from March 2024 until January 2023 are 15, but the fact is that the parent on the visitor visa has already stayed for a cumulative period of 12 months stay in the 18 month period in Australia.
IMPORTANT: It is very important to calculate the 12 months stay in 18 months by calculating it reverse from the date the parent of an Australian citizen or an Australian Permanent resident intends to return from Australia to their home country.
