Genuine Student Requirement

Starting on 23 March 2024, the Australian Government has introduced a new rule for student visa applicants called the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This rule replaces the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) condition. It applies to all student visa applications submitted on or after this date.

For applications submitted before 23 March 2024, the GTE requirement still applies. However, if you are planning to apply now or in the future, you must meet the updated GS requirement.

What is the Genuine Student Requirement?

The Genuine Student requirement confirms that a student’s main reason for entering Australia is to study. It also ensures that the applicant fully understands the responsibilities of living and studying in the country.

In addition, the GS requirement recognises that some students may contribute to the Australian workforce after completing their education and may later apply for permanent residency.

Who Needs to Meet the GS Requirement?

If you are seeking a student visa, you need to demonstrate that you are a true applicant.

Questions on the Visa Application Form

You are required to respond to the following questions, 150 words each.

  1. Describe your current situation. Include details about your family ties, connections to your community, work history, and economic background.
  2. Explain why you chose this course and education provider in Australia. Show your awareness of the course structure, study obligations, and what life in Australia involves.
  3. Explain how completing this course will benefit you personally or professionally.
  4. Share any other relevant information that supports your intention to study.

There is an extra question for individuals who have previously had a student visa or are applying from inside Australia on another visa.

These documents must be submitted through ImmiAccount. Generic or vague responses will not be considered strong enough.

How Genuine Student Applications Are Assessed

Visa officers look at several important factors when reviewing a Genuine Student application.

Personal Circumstances in Your Home Country

  • Why did you not choose to study locally
  • Your relationship with family and your community
  • Financial background
  • Any social or political challenges

Plans and Knowledge About Studying in Australia

Value of the Course to Your Future

If the candidate is a minor, the intentions of their parent, legal guardian, or spouse will also be taken into account.

The Genuine Student requirement mainly focuses on a student’s clear intent to study in Australia. It allows genuine candidates to show their motivation, background, and future goals while discouraging applicants who do not plan to follow through with education.
